When we purchased Howard Hall, the attic was acting as a fully-functioning apartment, complete with bathroom and kitchen. It was also suffering from some stability issues. We went in and tore out all of the interior walls that separated the space and returned it to an open floorplan. We then had new, hand-hewn support beams made on-site and then installed by being hoisted through the attic window. A fire escape leading from the attic down the north side of the house was also removed. Today, the attic is just that: an open, unfinished attic space.
