This tall and narrow house was built between two houses on what had been an alley between them. In the process, the builders failed to build walls that were structural on the sides. When we began working, the structure was condemned, the roof was collapsing, and the front foundation was failing.
The front brick facade was sandwiched in steel beams and held in position while we scooped out the old foundation and installed new footings and foundation walls, as well as a steel structure that runs up four floors to the ridge beam and supports the roof. Only then could we begin the project of building out the house, installing the Crittall windows, new metal roof, adding the radiant heat, baths, kitchen, and all other mechanical systems.
